Car parks are one of the most common sources of resident complaints: visitor bays full, boom gates slow, unauthorised cars parked for days. ANPR can fix a lot of that, but only if it is designed around how the building actually operates.
Automatic number plate recognition reads a vehicle plate and compares it with a list: residents, authorised visitors, trades, couriers or temporary permits. If the plate is on the list, the gate opens; if not, the driver is directed to an intercom or visitor process.
It is fast, hands-free and creates a record of every vehicle entry and exit. That record is useful for parking disputes, security incidents and understanding how the car park is actually used.
The technology is the easy part. The harder question is: how does a visitor get in? A good process might be a QR code or link sent by the resident, a booking portal, or an intercom call to the apartment. The ANPR system then checks the plate against the approved list for the right time window.
Always provide a fallback: an intercom, a phone number and a manual release for deliveries, hire cars and plate changes.
ANPR works best when it shares data with the access control system. A resident's vehicle, fob and mobile credential can be managed in one place, and a departed resident can be removed from both the building and the car park at once. Vehicle events can also be linked to CCTV for a complete record of an incident.
Number plates are personal information. Publish a clear privacy notice, limit who can search the vehicle log, set a retention period and avoid using the system for unrelated surveillance. Give residents a simple way to correct a plate or add a temporary vehicle.
