CCTV & privacy laws in Victoria

A camera is only useful if it is lawful. Here is how Victorian building owners and OCs should think about CCTV and privacy.

The basics

• Common areas — lobbies, corridors, car parks and entries are generally acceptable with clear signage.
• Private areas — never point into another home, a bathroom, change room or bedroom.
• Signage — tell people they are being recorded, and who to contact.
• Footage — keep it secure, limit access, and retain only as long as needed.

Workplace & strata

Workplace surveillance has extra rules around consultation. For strata, the OC should have a clear policy on who can view footage and why.
